The Trans-atlantic Slave Trade

(1525-1807)

To monopolize trade in the new world, there was a constant demand for labor. In addition to that, the crops that were produced were labor intensive, cash crops and not subsistence. This gave rise to the transatlantic slave trade.

While slavery had existed before, this kind of slavery was radically different because of geographical and numerical scale, and it was based on racial difference which became institutionalized ideas.

The Chattel slave trade was one such manifestation of the horrors of enslavement of life and future generations. African kings and monarchs actively participated in this slave trade by supplying slaves from the interior parts of Africa to the European powers in exchange for metals, guns etc.
